Tsakonian Dialect

It derived from the Doric dialect of ancient Greek language, in contrast with the official Greek language, that derived from the Hellenistic common language.

The Tsakonian language can be classified as completely different language from the Greek and is the most ancient vivid and spoken language in Greece, while it may even be in the world.

In the past the Tsakonian language was spoken not also in neighbouring regions of Laconia, but also in tsakonian colonies in the Sea of Marmara (Turkey).

Until 1997, the language was taught by local teachers in the High School of Tyros.

The language is on the list of the endangered languages of Unesco.

The visitor during its entrance at Leonidio sees a sign in the Tsakonian dialect with the words “Kaour Ekanate”, which means, “Welcome”.
